Treatment-Based Alternatives for Women Involved in the Justice System

At Santa Maria, we believe in second chances—and we know that recovery and healing are possible with the right support. Our criminal justice programs offer treatment-based alternatives to traditional incarceration, designed specifically for pregnant women and mothers with newborns.

Through compassionate, evidence-based care, we help women break the cycle of addiction, rebuild their lives, and strengthen their families.

Programs in partnership through referrals

Baby and Mother Bonding Initiative (BAMBI)is the program offered through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Women Helping Ourselves (WHO) program is offered through referrals from Harris County jail or probation.

Together, we work to create real pathways to recovery and long-term success.

A New Path Forward

Our criminal justice programs give women the opportunity to recover with dignity, reconnect with their families, and create a better future. We believe that treatment—not punishment—is the first step toward lasting change.

Our Program Focus

We address the whole person—mind, body, and family—with services that promote healing, stability, and self-sufficiency.

1. Substance Use Disorder Recovery
Evidence-based treatment to help women achieve and maintain long-term sobriety in a safe, structured environment.

2. Parenting & Family Bonding
Support for mothers to strengthen the emotional bond with their children, promote healthy development, and lay the foundation for a stable, nurturing home.

3. Life Skills & Economic Stability
Training and support in key areas like employment readiness, education, budgeting, and independent living—so participants can thrive beyond the program.

4. Reducing Recidivism
By addressing the root causes of incarceration—such as trauma, addiction, and lack of support—we help women successfully reintegrate into the community and lower the risk of returning to the justice system.
